The respirator can only effectively protect us when every breath passes through the filtration component. However, if it is not worn tightly or is not suitable, air will seep in from the edges (because air always follows the path of least resistance). Moreover, we must keep in mind that its APF (inhalation pressure) is only effective when the PAPR (positive pressure mask) is properly fitted. Therefore, the wearing test is a necessary step to ensure our safety at work.
The current issue is how to ensure that the enclosed space is properly sealed and that the appropriate wearing tests are conducted? Here are the key points for inspection:
First of all, before starting the test wearing process, there are some crucial precautions to follow. We must ensure that no jewelry, clothing accessories or facial hair gets in the way, as this could cause any obstruction.
Secondly, correctly wear the PAPR helmet - the headband should fit comfortably and leave sufficient space, to prevent the face mask from pressing against the face. The overall wearing experience must be comfortable.
Keep a distance of 6 inches between your face and the mask, and then conduct a rapid pressure test. This step is necessary to ensure that the fully sealed type of equipment achieves a complete seal.
Positive pressure test - Exhale gently and try to sense if there is any leakage. If a certain pressure is generated within the work mask when you exhale gently, it indicates a good seal and no leakage at the edges.
Negative pressure check - Inhale gently to create a vacuum inside the mask. If you feel that no air is being sucked in at the edges, it indicates a good and tight seal.
During these tests, if you find any leakage at the sealing points, please re-adjust the position of the welding helmet (including the respirator) and repeat the check until the appropriate fit is achieved.
According to the regulations of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the United States (OSHA), the fitting test of PAPR (Personal Protective Face Mask Pressure) is not completed in one go. We conduct such tests at least once a year, or when changing to different models; moreover, when there are physical changes in personnel (such as weight loss or dental treatment), a fitting check must also be conducted again. Based on my experience, this is the only way to ensure the continuous effectiveness of the sealing effect.
