When choosing a welding mask, you should pay attention to the following eight points:

1. It should meet the quality standards.

The safety helmet you choose should comply with either ANSI (*) Z87.1 – 2003 (also known as ANSI Z87+) or the European BS EN 175:1997 standards.

2. Passive and automatic dimming lenses.

The automatic dimming welding mask will darken automatically when the welder initiates an arc. The main advantage of such masks is that even if the electronic components fail, it can still provide the minimum level of protection according to the ANSI standard. Additionally, all standard automatic dimming masks can 100% block harmful infrared and ultraviolet rays, with their light-blocking ranges ranging from #8 for low current operations to #13 for high current operations.

Passive welding masks usually remain in an upward-revealed state. The welder will flip them down by quickly nodding or twisting their neck before initiating the arc. Although this is an economical choice:

3. Fixed color lenses and variable color lenses.

If you choose an automatic dimming lens, you need to select between fixed light-blocking lenses and variable light-blocking lenses based on the welding requirements. Fixed light-blocking lenses can only dim to the preset light-blocking level, usually #10. Such lenses are very suitable for single processes and materials welding. If multiple processes and materials are involved, it is recommended to choose variable light-blocking lenses.

4. Lens response time.

This is the time from the spark explosion to the dimming of the protective glasses. This process must be extremely rapid. Even a tiny delay can lead to what is called "arc eye", causing discomfort and dryness in the eyes, which may result in serious eye damage. The speed range is between 1/3600 seconds (entry-level protective glasses) and 1/20000 seconds (industrial or professional protective glasses). The larger the number, the faster the response speed of the protective glasses.

5. Arc sensor.

The difference between basic and professional automatic dimming welding masks lies in the number of sensors that detect welding sparks to start the dimming process. Basic masks are equipped with two sensors, while advanced ones are equipped with three or four.

6. Weight and comfort.

Since welders need to wear the helmet for a long time, these two factors should be considered to reduce neck fatigue and prevent other injuries. The following suggestions are proposed: Choose a helmet weighing one pound, try it on and make adjustments to ensure a comfortable fit; at the same time, confirm that the helmet frame and headband are both comfortable, of high quality, and of the appropriate size.

7. Viewing area.

The field of view of each welding mask is different. You should try different styles to determine which one is the most suitable for you. This depends on whether you prefer a wider field of view or a narrower one to focus on a specific area. The quality of the mask directly affects your observation effect of the weld seam and its surrounding environment, which in turn affects your work quality.

8. Choose a reputable brand

Although this advice applies to many different industries and products, it is particularly important in the welding industry. When you are working in extremely high temperatures or at difficult-to-access positions, you must ensure that the equipment is operating properly. Well-known brands in the welding field have years of direct cooperation with welders and not only provide high-quality equipment but also listen carefully to their feedback.
